Dutch culture đ
Learning a new language can be hard, frustrating even⊠but it can also be fun. You just have to know where to look.
Luckily for me, you donât have to look too far to find funny sounding words and phrases in Dutch. Here are some Iâve learnt so farâŠ
1. ApetrotsÂ
My first Dutch WTF moment was watching a film with subtitles when the screen flashed up âIk ben apetrots op jeâ literally meaning âI am monkey proud on you.â (The correct translation in English is âIâm really proud of youâ.) A brilliant Dutchism⊠and itâs now one of my favourite Dutch sayings đ
2. Boterham

Literally translated as âbutter hamâ â it actually means sandwich or a slice of bread.
3. Eekhoorntjesbrood
While weâre on the food theme⊠letâs go with the word for Porcini mushrooms, which literally translates as âlittle squirrelsââŠ

You will like this book, if your Dutch is a bit better. http://www.bol.com/nl/p/i-always-get-my-sin/1001004002618092/ This is a book about stupid Dutch people translating Dutch literally to English. Things like âHow do you do? And how do you do your wife?”
